Sustainability - Concepts and Practice 3/4 (U02250)

This course will explore the origins, scientific and social, of 'sustainability' as an issue and the concepts and definitional issues surrounding the term and its synonyms. It will enable students to differentiate between the underpinning principles and contemporary meanings adopted by various sectors of society. Through examination of international, national and local agreements on sustainability students will critically review the motivations for and implementation of such policies, particularly in light of cultural and itergenerational equity. The course will also consider the implications of this concept for reviewing individual ethics and for professional practice in the sector.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

On completing this course students will be able to:

1. understand the historical development of the 'environment' as a contemporary issue and the emergence of the concepts of 'sustainability' and 'sustainable development' etc.
2. distinguish between various understandings of 'sustainability' including its scientific basis and the contemporary 'social, economic and environmental' approach.
3. critically review a range of theoretical positions and their implications for 'sustainability'.
4. adopt a critical reflective stance on international and national agreements relating to sustainability.
5. review the concept of sustainability and relevant policies relating to it in a framework of cultural and intergenerational equity.
6. articulate their own stance on sustainability and explain what the concept means for them in their professional practice.
