Outdoor Education: International Perspectives 4 (U02252)? Credit Points : 40 ? SCQF Level : 10 ? Acronym : EDU-4-OEIP This fourth year course shifts the focus of study from the UK to the rest of the world. Previous knowledge will be developed through comparison and contrast with outdoor education philosophy and practice in other countries and through critical analysis of national and international approaches to countryside access, recreation and education out-of-doors. Theory addresses educational, social, historical and cultural influences on education out-of-doors, primarily in Europe, North American and Australasia. Students will further develop research and critical analysis skills to extend their knowledge and challenge assumptions in outdoor education and related areas such as recreation, adventure therapy and nature-based tourism. By the end of this unit students will be able to:
1. compare and critically analyse the approaches to countryside access from a national and international perspective, 2. critically examine the relationship between outdoor education philosophy and practice in a number of countries, including the UK 3. critically examine global relationships between outdoor education and related areas such as recreation, adventure/nature tourism, adventure therapy, corporate training, 4. with reference to broader educational literature challenge assumptions in national and international approaches to learning outdoors, 5. critically analyse the links between outdoor education and school curricula in countries other than the UK, 6. critically examine key issues in the broader outdoor sector at an international level.
