China's Twentieth Century Revolutions (VS1) (U02260)? Credit Points : 20 ? SCQF Level : 10 ? Acronym : HCA-3-VS1-CTCR The course aims to chart political, social and cultural change in China from the early years of the twentieth century, when China's last dynasty, the Qing (1644-1912), sanctioned nation-building reforms, to the last years of the twentieth century when China's Communist-Party state promoted market-oriented economic reforms to improve the people's standard of living and legitimize continuing Communist party rule. Entry Requirements? This course is only available to part year visiting students. ? This course is a variant of the following course : HI0162 ? Pre-requisites : A pass in any first level historical course and any second level historical course or equivalent. Visiting students should normally have 3 to 4 History courses at grade B or above. Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
The student will acquire an insight into the meaning and significance of the dramatic changes (as well as continuities) that have marked China during the twentieth century, and will gain an understanding of new historiogrpahical approaches that have questioned conventional views on the nature of such changes.
Assessment Information
One essay of about 3000 words (one third of overall assessment); one take home examination essay (two-thirds of overall assessment).
