Greek Tragedy (VS1) (U02296)? Credit Points : 20 ? SCQF Level : 10 ? Acronym : HCA-3-VS-GKTRAG This course will look at two fifth century Attic tragedies. The texts will be studied and analysed in detail and interpreted in their literary and historical contexts. Entry Requirements? This course is only available to part year visiting students. ? This course is a variant of the following course : CL0119 ? Pre-requisites : Advanced-level ability in Greek language and literature, equivalent to two years' study at the University of Edinburgh (if uncertain, consult the course organiser). ? Special Arrangements for Entry : This course is only for visiting students in Edinburgh during the 1st Semester but NOT the 2nd Semester. Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of the course, students will: have read the two tragedies in Greek; have a thorough knowledge of the content of the two plays; have a good knowledge of the language and style of the two authors; have a basic understanding of the literary and social conventions of fifth century Athenian tragedy; be acquainted with the use and function of traditional myth, in spoken and sung verse, in fifth century tragedy in the context of fifth century Athenian society; be familiar with the use of fifth century rhetoric practice and rhetorical elements in tragedy; be aware of various modes of constructing and representing character in tragedy.
Assessment Information
One essay - 30%; one take home examination essay - 70%.
