The social and economic history of world urbanization and urban life with particular reference to early cities, medieval Britain and Europe, the industrial and colonial city in Europe, Africa and the Americas and the urban crisis of the 20th century.

Entry Requirements

? This course is only available to part year visiting students.

? This course is a variant of the following course : ES0004

? Pre-requisites : A pass in the equivalent of British Society,c.1650-2000 (Social History 1) or Sociology 1 or Economic History 1 or British History 1 or European History 1 or equivalent.

? Prohibited combinations : Not to be taken together with Social History 2.1

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

- Student-led seminars are intended to develop the presentation and verbal skills of participating students.
- Written assignments are intended to develop the literary skills of students and their ability to construct coherent argument and analysis.

Assessment Information

One essay (26%), one short assignment (14%) and one take-home examination paper in week 11 worth 60% of final mark.
