Sexuality and the State in Britain 1880-1945 (U02482)

This course is taught through one 1.5 lecture and fifteen 1.5 hour seminar sessions. The course will adopt a broadly thematic approach. An introductory, contextual lecture will provide an overview of the historiographical and theoretical issues involved. Thereafter, seminars will focus on the role of central and local government in addressing a range of public order, public morality and public health problems and/or panics relating to sexuality, including, abortion, child sexual abuse, contraception and family planning, 'homosexual offences', pornography, prostitution, ,teenage promiscuity, venereal disease and the impact of war on sexual behaviour. The course content is also structured so as to provide students with a firm chronological understanding of the subject and will include seminars on developments during key sub-periods. In analysing the dynamics of policy-making towards sexuality, a range of elementary social science concepts will be used, but no prior knowledge of the period or social theory is required.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

Students undertaking this course will acquire:
- A substantive knowledge of the history of sexuality in Britain during the period 1880-1945 and of the processes of policy-making as they related to issues of sexuality and sexual behaviour.
- An ability to deploy both historical and social scientific concepts in analysing the actions of the central and local State in responding to 'dangerous sexualities'.
- An awareness of the historiographical and archival issues surrounding the social history of sexuality.
- An ability to engage with a specific area of modern British social history, incorporating appropriate literary, data-analytical, and bibliographical skills.
- Student-led seminars are intended to develop the presentation and verbal skills of participating students.
- Written assignments are intended to develop the literary skills of students and their ability to construct coherent argument and analysis.
