? Credit Points : 20  ? SCQF Level : 10  ? Acronym : HCA-3-Sex

This course is taught through one 1.5 lecture and fifteen 1.5 hour seminar sessions. The course will adopt a broadly thematic approach. An introductory, contextual lecture will provide an overview of the historiographical and theoretical issues involved. Thereafter, seminars will focus on the role of central and local government in addressing a range of public order, public morality and public health problems and/or panics relating to sexuality, including, abortion, child sexual abuse, contraception and family planning, 'homosexual offences', pornography, prostitution, sexually transmitted diseases, teenage promiscuity, the 'permissive society' and the threat of HIV/AIDS. The course content is also structured so as to provide students with a firm chronological understanding of the subject and will include seminars on developments during key sub-periods. In analysing the dynamics of policy-making towards sexuality, a range of elementary social science concepts will be used, but no prior knowledge of the period or social theory is required.
