Christianity in Celtic Lands: Christianity & Church Among the Celtic-speaking Peoples of the Early Middle Ages (U02506)? Credit Points : 20 ? SCQF Level : 10 ? Acronym : HCA-3-CHRCELT This course will be a study, through the primary sources, of the development of Christianity and the Church among the Insular Celtic-speaking peoples before the First Viking Age. This is a subject that should have a wide appeal, but one which needs to be taught with a degree of intellectual rigour and freedom from popular and populist notions of 'The Celtic Church' and 'Celtic Christianity'. Entry Requirements? Pre-requisites : A pass in any first level historical course or equivalent and any second level historical course or equivalent. Visiting students should normally have 3 to 4 History courses at grade B or above. Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the course, students will have acquired considerable experience of critically evaluating different types of primary source material and current scholarly literature in the light of new research. In addition, through presentations and seminar discussion, students will have further developed their skills in presenting and defending their ideas and findings in a critical environment.
Assessment Information
The course will be examined by one essay of 3000 words and a single 2-hour paper. The essay must be submitted at the end of the semester. In the examination paper, two questions must be answered; the first (compulsory) question will require comment on three (out of five) passages from primary sources; one essay, from a choice of about six, must also be written. All questions will be given equal weight in marking. The course essay will make up one third of the final assessment. The examination paper will make up the remaining two thirds of the final assessment. Students can expect written feedback and individual consultation on their work. The Course Organiser will keep regular consultation hours; individual interviews/tutorials will be made available to students as required. The external examiner of Scottish History will include this course in his responsibilities.
