Culture and Piety in Scotland, c.1450-c.1650 (U02510)

Increasingly historians of Reformation Scotland are emphasising the spiritual and cultural continuities as well as the changes after the 'event' in 1560. However, the pre-Reformation and post-Reformation periods still tend to be treated separately, whether divided by 1560 or more broadly into the categorisations 'Late Medieval' and 'Early Modern', as has been highlighted by two of Edinburgh's Scottish historians. This course will bridge this arbitrary divide through focusing on culture and piety at regional, local, and parish level over a two hundred year span from the mid fifteenth century to the mid seventeenth century. It will draw on the course organiser's experience as a co-editor of the South-East Scotland volume for the Records of Early Drama: Scotland series and will be multi-disciplinary in outlook bringing together recent and often complementary work of specialists from disciplines including Scottish History, Architectural History, Art History, Ethnology, Archaeology, and Literature.

Entry Requirements

? Pre-requisites : A pass in any first level historical course or equivalent and a pass in any second lelove historical course or equivalent. Visiting students should normally have 3 to 4 History courses at grade B or above.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

It is intended that the students will develop critical skills of analysis through their reading of both primary printed sources and secondary material from a range of disciplines. Presentational and communication skills will be developed through both the written work and oral presentations at seminars. Independent research skills will be developed through the work on the artefact assignment.

Assessment Information

The course will require one 2,000 word essay (week 7), one 2,000 word assignment (week 11), and one two-hour exam. The essay and assignment together will make up 33% of the final assessment. The exam will be worth 67% of the final assessment. Students can expect written feedback and individual consultation on their work.
