History of Muslim-Christian Dialogue (U02570)

This course examines the history of Muslim-Christian relations from the rise of Islam until the end of the eighteenth century. The course will begin with Muhammad's relations with Christians, and will focus on Qur'anic material which deals with Jesus, Christians and Christianity. It will then move on to early Christian reponses to Islam, the interaction between medieval European Christians and Muslims, and early Orientalism.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

1. Identify relevant scriptural passages for Muslim-Christian dialogue and their tradition of interpretation in Muslim and Christian communities.
2. Understand the historical and political contexts of theological exchanges.
3. Identify continuity and change in trends in Muslim-Christian Dialogue.

Assessment Information

One 2000 word essay,(20%) one 3 hour exam (80%)
