Classical Archaeology 1B: The Roman World (U02639)

The course is designed for sub-honours students to provide them with a survey of the Archaeology of Classical lands. Lectures concentrate on the archaeology of Italy and of important sites such as Rome, Herculaneum and Pompeii. Then it examines important aspects of Roman towns such as private and public houses, the forum, baths and Roman villas. Classes on private and public religion and aspects of the burial practices are also given. The examination of the Roman world continues with classes dedicated to the archaeological remains from the Roman provinces. General surveys are presented on the Italy and the Iberian Peninsula, the north-western, African and Eastern Provinces and the Danube lands and Greece under Roman rule. Finally the course examines important issues such as Roman engineering, industry, trade routes and with them roads and harbours. A series of lectures is also dedicated to the Roman army and Roman forts and finally to the peoples living at the frontiers of the Roman world.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course students will:-
- have knowledge of the archaeology of the Roman world, including a wide range of geographical regions and various aspects of their material culture;
- be able to use effectively a variety of evidence to reconstruct the archaeology of the Roman World;
- be able present their argument in an oral presentations;
- have acquired the competence to express their argument convincingly in written examinations and course work

Assessment Information

One oral presentation (25%);
one essay of c. 1000 words (25%);
one (2-hour) Degree Examination (50%).
