Political Theory and European Integration (U02826)

Building on knowledge and skills gained from previous studies in political theory and in the EU, the course will examine normative theoretical issues and debates in European integration, such as the democratic deficit, the political legitimacy of the EU, citizenship and identity or identities, political community and constitutionalism.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course students should have developed their skills in research, communication, task management, debate, analysis, critique, the evaluation of theoretical and empirical claims, the capacity to compose coherent arguments, the exercise of judgement after reflection, the understanding of core propositions in political theory, be familiar with key texts and scholarship in the field, be able to identify normative questions arising from European integration, be able to draw accurately and fruitfully on a variety of disciplinary approaches and models in understanding politics in the EU.
