Le Conte Traditionnel en France (Ordinary) (U02914)? Credit Points : 20 ? SCQF Level : 9 ? Acronym : LLC-3-FR0071 The course introduces the concepts and theories associated with the study of traditional narratives, covering such issues as orality and literacy, traditional and formulaic composition, motif and type within the tale. Sociological and psychoanalytic approaches to understanding the tales will be explored alongside structural and aesthetic ones. Through the close reading of a number of masterpieces of the genre, all of which show various approaches to rehandling the traditional material by conscious literary artists, it will offer not only a broad knowledge of the types of traditional tale current in France from the Middle Ages to the present day, but encourage exploration of the cultural and social pressures which both keep alive and constantly modify some of the most fundamental of human stories. ?
