Politics of Development (U02923)

? Credit Points : 20  ? SCQF Level : 10  ? Acronym : SPS-3-POLDEV

Development is a process of economic change, typically associated with growth and diversification. While centred on transformations in the economy, development is a profoundly political process, shaped by interactions of domestic and international actors, and with tremendous
effects on social actors and political institutions. This course explores the politics of development by analyzing the social-scientific theories of development as well as the actors and institutions involved in development and underdevelopment. We will also consider how different types of economies have developed, or underdeveloped, during the 20th century through case studies of developing-world agricultural, industrial, mining, and tourist economies.
