Nineteenth and Early Twentieth Century American Women Writers (VS1) (U02990)

This course participates in ongoing discussions about canonicity and literary history. The time period covered continues to 1920 since many texts published early in the Twentieth Century bridge the boundary of 1900 in style, theme or perspective. Crucial questions concerning social identity, genre and culture will be considered, together with the writers' self-identification and their attitudes towards their work.

? Pre-requisites : None required

? Special Arrangements for Entry : Numbers are limited to 15, with priority given to students taking degrees involving English or Scottish Literature and Visiting Students placed by the Admissions Office. Students not in these categories need the written approval of the Head of English Literature before enrolling. In the case of excess applications places will be decided by ballot.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

Students taking the course will also attempt to reassess "sentimentalism" as a genre which engages with readers on many levels, emotional, political, historical and aesthetic.

Assessment Information

1 course essay of 2,500 words (25%); 1 take-away examination essay of 3,000 words (75%)
