Republic, Civil War and Dictatorship: Spain 1931 - 1975 (VS1) (U03029)? Credit Points : 20 ? SCQF Level : 10 ? Acronym : HCA-3-RCWD This course examines an exceptionally divisive period of modern Spanish history. The democractic Second Republic established in 1931 was overthrown after a brutal three-year Civil war in 1939; the victor, General Franco, was to rule Spain until his death in 1975. We will discuss the reasons for the failure of democracy in the 1930's and analyse the nature of the civil war. The course will then examine how Franco used military victory to build an exclusionary 'National Catholic' Spain. Finally, we will consider why the Franco regime managed to outlive its facist backers in the civil war and become one of the most enduring dictatorships of twentieth century Europe.
