Clinical Neuropsychology: a Cognitive Perspective (VS1) (U03048)

This option examines the clinical neuropsychological assessment of a selection of focal neuropsychological disorders. The pattern of cognitive dysfunction in disorders such as semantic dementia, frontal lobe syndroms, amnesia and Alzheimer's Disease will be studied and explained using cognitive models of memory, semantic organisation and behaviour control. In addition the option will examine how the study of focal neurological disorders has helped to develop our understanding of normal cognitive systems and processes.

? This course is only available to part year visiting students.

? This course is a variant of the following course : U02140

? Pre-requisites : Degree major in Psychology and passes in psychology courses at least to the equivalent of junior honours level in Edinburgh. Prior agreement with the 4th Year Honours Course Organiser: Dr. Martha Whiteman (Ext. 50 3317).

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

Students will gain knowledge of:
- Clinical neuropsychological assessment and neuropsychological tests used within a clinical setting.
- Neuropsychological presentation of a range of clinical neurological disorders.
- Experimental cognitive tests used within neuropsychological research.
- Brain imaging techniques used to investigate cognitive dysfunction.
- Students will be able to apply cognitive models to explain profiles of cognitive and behavioural dysfunction.

Assessment Information

Long essay (3,000 words) to be set by the course organiser and due Friday 5pm Week 13.
