Acronym : ACE-3-U03088 This courses uses the piano as a basis from which to explore music, culture and society in the nineteenth century. The piano played a pivotal role in nineteenth century society. It was the instrument of choice for the amateur musician, and an essential feature in the middle-class household. Many of the leading composers were pianists, and some of the most significant genres to emerge during the period were directly associated with the instrument. ? Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
In engaging with the music of the period, students will develop their musical analytical skills and critical awareness. Through studying the social and cultural aspects of the course they will develop sound research methods, the ability to read critically, and the ability to evaluate arguments and articulate their conclusions through discussion and in written form.
Students will familiarise themselves with an essential section of the musical repertoire. They will develop an awareness of technical developments to the piano in the nineteenth century and performance practices relating to the period. This will play an important role in informing students' own performances of nineteenth century piano music, both within the course and in the longer term. Assessment Information
Presentation (20%) two coursework essays c.3,000 words (40% each).
