The Child in the Text (U03110)

This Special Subject will study the treatment of childhood and adolescence in French fiction from 1900 to the present day. Through the close analysis of a selection of texts, the course aims to develop students? understanding of the numerous thematic and formal issues raised by the fictional representation of childish and adolescent experience, while at the same time familiarising them with the work of a number of leading French writers whose work spans the twentieth century. The course aims to develop knowledge and understanding of the importance of the themes of childhood and adolescence in 20th-century French literature and of their particular place in the work of the writers studied.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

As in all French Special Subjects, students should, by the end of the course, be able:
- to demonstrate advanced knowledge and understanding of the chosen specialism(s)
- to recognise and acknowledge the complexity of the subject
- to show a good understanding of and apply competently complex conceptual frameworks
- to construct coherent arguments which demonstrate an awareness of the problems posed by the texts/ issues which they are studying
- to demonstrate a high level of expression in both written and oral presentations
- to demonstrate the mastery of relevant technical terminology and research methods
- to carry out personal research under the guidance of the tutor and offer evidence of research initiative
- to offer alternative perspectives, identify and accommodate ambiguities and show an awareness of nuance
- to develop original ideas
- to demonstrate an awareness of the research agenda relating to the topic
More specifically, the should be able to show:
- a good understanding of the ways in which the representation of the child and childhood allows the authors to explore a number of broader themes relating to perception, memory, sexuality, class, identity, etc.
- a good understanding of the sorts of technical demands made and formal opportunities offered by the choice of a child protagonist or child narrator
- a good understanding of the relationship and distinctions between fiction, autofiction and autobiography in the texts studied.

One three-hour exam.
