Writing and Filming Travel (U03111)

? Credit Points : 20  ? SCQF Level : 10  ? Acronym : LLC-4-U03111

This course will focus, in the first instance, on representations of travel by French authors in a colonial context. This will enable the identification of travel practices and patterns of perception that define nineteenth-century travel accounts of colonised destinations and that are later repeated, modified or challenged by French and Francophone authors and filmmakers in the post-colonial era. Through close analysis of a number of texts (including films), the course aims to develop an understanding of the ways in which the meaning and practice of travel have evolved since its colonial heyday to the present era of mass global movement. The course aims to promote an awareness of the generic and thematic issues raised by representations of travel, and also an understanding of the ways in which gender, class and cultural origins inflect upon definitions of travel.
