From Baroque to Classicism: French Theatre 1620-1680 (U03113)

This Special Subject for French Senior Honours aims to encourage students to engage knowledgeably and critically with texts and ideas relating to literature, history of ideas and cultural issues. It will also promote a critical understanding of a culture other than their own, of literary genre and theoretical approaches.
It will develop cognitive skills such as the ability to engage with and interpret layers of meaning within texts, to contextualise from a variety of perspectives, to extract and synthesise key information from written sources, to organise and present ideas in a structured and reasoned manner. Linguistically, students will be required to present material in the target language in a clear and effective way.
Student presentations will encourage them to develop the ability to work autonomously and to meet deadlines, library and bibliographical research skills and IT skills such as word processing, databases, on-line research.

? Pre-requisites : Entrance to French 4 Honours

? Prohibited combinations : This course can NOT be taken in conjunction with Seventeenth Century French Theatre [FR0031]

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

? As in all French Special Subjects, students will learn to present exposes, and to conduct debates in French at a high intellectual level, orally and in writing.
? Students will acquire an understanding of the evolution of French Theatre of the period and of the reasons for this evolution.
? Students will have assimilated the main features of dramatic writing.
? Students will acquire a broad knowledge of the relevant literature of the period, then develop their own interests, engaging in independent research to produce a dissertation on an agreed topic relating to the course?s main theme.

One 3 hour exam.
