Applications of Economic Analysis (U03140)

This course is designed to consolidate and deepen the understanding of core analytical and econometric techniques developed in the core economics courses taken in years 1 and 2 and semester 1 of year 3. Students will be expected to adapt and apply these techniques to a variety of applied and policy contexts. Applications covered are likely to be drawn from: cost benefit analysis and project evaluation of public sector investment; the economics of health, education, transport, marriage and divorce, crime and punishment; lobbying, rent-seeking and corruption; privatization; poverty and redistribution; demographic changes and funding social security; optimal currency areas and the euro; optimal policy areas and fiscal federalism; monetary policy operating procedures and transmission mechanisms; politics and economic growth; development aid, debt and conditionality; globalization.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

After successful completion of this course students will have developed their understanding of core analytical; and econometric techniques and ability to adapt and apply these techniques to a variety of contexts. The course emphasises general skills such as: critical analysis and assessment; reasoning adaptably and systematically; problem-framing and problem-solving; exercising informed independent thought and critical judgement; obtaining and processing information from a variety of sources; presentation and communication skills.
