Topics in Economic Analysis 1 (VS1) (U03141)? Credit Points : 20 ? SCQF Level : 10 ? Acronym : MSE-3-TEA1-VS-S This course is designed to provide a coherent development of some important topics in economic analysis at a more advanced level than that of standard intermediate courses. It thus extends and deepens the work of Economics 1A and Economics 2, bridging the gap between intermediate and graduate level courses in economics, and providing insight into some recent areas of economic research activity. Throughout there is an emphasis on the application of economic principles. The course has a mathematical content and knowledge of basic calculus is assumed. Topics covered are likely to be drawn from: topics in asymmetric information (e.g. matching, adverse selection, signalling, and moral hazard) with applications to e.g. employment, contracts, optimal taxation, insurance and credit markets; and general equilibrium analysis and welfare. After successful completion of this course students will have developed their understanding of core principles and models used in economic analysis, and related mathematical techniques, to a level appropriate for an advanced undergraduate. The course emphasises general skills such as: critical analysis and assessment; reasoning adaptably and systematically; problem-framing and problem-solving.
Assessment Information
Two 1,500 word essays (75%) and a multiple choice exam in December (25%).
