Areas covered will include variationist sociolinguistics, elementary notions of historical language reconstruction, and first and second language acquisition. By the end of the course, students will learn
- to appreciate the links between language variation and language change and those between language acquisition and language change; - to understand aspects of discourse structure and the relevance of social factors in language use; - to understand the basic principles of historical reconstruction; - to understand current ideas about how language is acquired by both children and adults (and lost through injury or disease), including some knowledge of the biological substratum. Coursework (essays and assignments)(50%); 2 hour degree examination (50%).
