Linguistics 1B (U03163)

The course will introduce students to topics in sociolinguistics and discourse analysis, historical linguistics, and language acquisition. Areas covered will include variationist sociolinguistics, elementary notions of historical language reconstruction, and first and second language acquisition.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students will learn
- to appreciate the links between language variation and language change and those between language acquisition and language change;
- to understand aspects of discourse structure and the relevance of social factors in language use;
- to understand the basic principles of historical reconstruction;
- to understand current ideas about how language is acquired by both children and adults (and lost through injury or disease), including some knowledge of the biological substratum.

Assessment Information

Coursework (essays and assignments)(50%); 2 hour degree examination (50%).
