Core Texts in Political Theory (U03187)? Credit Points : 20 ? SCQF Level : 10 ? Acronym : SPS-3-CTPT The course examines a selection of core sixteenth-to-nineteenth century texts that have assumed classic status in discussions of political theory. The selection of texts may vary from year to year, but central themes (such as social contract theory) and often-referred to writers (for example Hobbes and Locke and Rousseua) are the focus of attention. The course covers historical and textual questions, but concentrates on conceptual issues that are of continuing interest and concern. Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course, students should have knowledge of texts and issues that are central to political theory's development. They should be able to follow complex and, sometimes, historically remote texts and arguments. They should have gained improved textual and analytical and evaluative skills. They should have acquired a grouding in works that remain fundamental to debate today.
