Seventeenth Century French Theatre (Ordinary) (U03267)? Credit Points : 20 ? SCQF Level : 9 ? Acronym : LLC-3-FR0031 The literature of the seventeenth century reflects some important religious and political trends. After a brief exposition of the reign of Louis XIII and the establishment of the Compagnie de Jesus as a political force this course will look at the impact of absolute monarchy and Jansenism and their influence on literature in the second half of the century. It will trace the representation of the human condition from the triumph of the hero (Corneille) to 'la demolition du heros' (Racine) following the decline of the aristocracy and the rise of the bourgeoisie under Louis XIV (Moliere). Concentrating on the three main dramatists of the period, this option will be text-based and students will be expected to be major contributors to the discussion generated by the points raised.
