Chrétien et Tristan (Ordinary) (U03269)

? Credit Points : 20  ? SCQF Level : 9  ? Acronym : LLC-3-FR0059

The Tristan legend is one of the most fecund sources of literary and artistic material in the Western tradition; it is the archetypal love-story. It also deeply marked the sensibilities and work of the greatest writer of romances in the Middle Ages, Chrétien de Troyes, who was the virtual founder of the Arthurian tradition in European literature. The course will study in detail the two versions of the Tristan story available to Chrétien, and then consider those of his own romances most heavily influenced by the older material, but showing two different reactions to it. Using a mixture of close reading and general thematic study, the course will explore the aesthetic and moral issues raised by the texts in their twelfth-century context and for modern readers.
