Science Fiction (VS1) (U03284)

This course, aims to introduce students to the themes and contexts of science fiction in the twentieth century, with the intention that they should become aware of the literary value of this genre (for example, as one of the progenitors of contemporary ?postmodern? writing). Particular attention will be paid to the resonance of science-fiction writing in areas such as ecological awareness, feminism, historical development, political theory, and the impact of technology upon everyday existence.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

Students who complete the course should be able to
1) comprehend the range of subject matter in twentieth-century science fiction
2) understand the relation of science fiction to a) political consciousness (left- and right-wing), b) historiography, c) ecological consciousness, d) political satire, e) feminism, f) ?cyborg? theory.
3) employ appropriate theories for these concerns, such as a) theorisation of the ?Other?, b) liberalism and libertarianism, c) historiography, d) critiques of consumer culture, e) feminism, f) ?cyborg? theory
4) write about science fiction with an awareness of its literary complexity in dimensions such as genre, language, symbolism, narrative technique, and so forth.

Assessment Information

One course essay 2,500 words (25%)

One examination essay of 3,000 words (75%)
