Regulation, Governance and Policing (U03297)? Credit Points : 40 ? SCQF Level : 10 ? Acronym : LAW-3-LAW This course takes a socio-legal perspective to the study of policing, governance, and regulation. It looks at the different institutions that regulate behaviour, particularly the police. It also looks at how regulatory agencies (like the police) are themselves regulated, e.g. made to be accountable. We will explore regulatory processes in several areas, including the police and the development of the nation state, sex offenders, food, and art. ? Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
Students will:
--Be able to identify and describe the institutional and legal structures governing the operations of the police and other key agencies and markets. --Possess the theoretical tools for critically analysing these structures and processes --Understand the historical, social, and political context of selected regulatory agencies --Have had practice critically engaging with these issues in oral and written forms, and in individual and small group settings.
