Special History in Music: Scottish Art Music from the Renaissance to the Enlightenment (VS1) (U03366)? Credit Points : 20 ? SCQF Level : 10 ? Acronym : ACE-3-Scottish1 This course will deal with the period from the late 15th to the late 18th centuries, covering the two main periods in which Scottish art music flourished: the Renaissance and the Enlightenment. The music will be studied in its historical and social contexts. Students will be introduced to historical documents, prints and manuscripts and will be made familiar with the surviving musical repertory by both Scottish-born and adopted composers. ? This course is a variant of the following course : U03355 ? Pre-requisites : Standard equivalent to two years of music history and sufficient musical literacy to tackle musical analysis. Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
Students on this course will have:
Learned about the historical, social and cultural background of Music in Scotland between c. 1500 and c. 1800. Got to know a representative sample of music by Scottish composers over this period, as well as music by other European composers which was performed in Scotland. Learned to interpret documentary evidence relevant to music in Scotland over this period and gained experience in searching for and handling such materials. Assessment Information
Presentation (10%), two essays of c.3000 words (45% each).
