It offers an introduction to the Roman world, from the beginnings of Roman history to its heights, thus covering one of the most dynamic periods of the ancient world. ? Additional Class Information : In addition to the lectures, students are required to participate in four tutorials over the semester; the tutorials will run in place of four lectures. Time and place for the tutorials will be arranged in the first class meeting. Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
After successful completion of this course the student should be able to
- demonstrate in written examination and course work as well as through tutorial participation (established through a course work log-book) a sound knowledge and understanding of a) the main outlines of Roman history b) the wider historical context of Roman history b) the major factors which determined Roman history, especially political, economic, social, and military developments c) the strength and weaknesses of the source material for this period of ancient history d) the various methodologies used by historians to examine political, institutional, social, religious and economic questions, and the ways in which these inter-relate They should in addition be able to a) gather material independently on a given topic and organising it into a coherent data set b) compare differing sets of data from varying situations and drawing conclusions from them c) evaluate different approaches to and explanations of material, and making critical choices between them d) express clearly ideas and arguments e) organise complex and lengthy sets of arguments and drawing these together into a coherent conclusion f) organise their own learning, managing their workload and working to a timetable. g) work efficiently and productively with others - fellow students, tutors and supervisors. One essay - 30%.
One (2-hour) degree examination paper - 70%. Exam times
