Archaeology 2B: Understanding Past Societies (U03401)

The course consists of two modules: (c) Social Organisation - how archaeologists attempt to identify the scale and organization of societies and the degree of social hierarchy; and (d) Interpreting the Past - how can we reach from the archaeological evidence to explanations of the social, economic and cultural changes we believe we can see in the record.

Entry Requirements

? Pre-requisites : A pass in Archaeology 1 or in Archaeology 1A and 1B or in Archaeology of Scotland 1A and 1B or Classical Archaeology 1, or Archaeology 2A, or with permission of the Head of School

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

A knowledge and understanding of the following:
- The principal sources of evidence that can be used to reconstruct those elements of the human past covered in the course
- The difficulties involved in interpreting that evidence, and the major areas of controversy
- A critical awareness of how archaeological perceptions and approaches to research have historically influenced interpretations of the evidence

Assessment Information

Essay, practical exercises, tutorial presentation. 1 essay = 20%, 1 tutorial paper = 20%, practical exercises = 20%, one 2 hour degree exam paper = 40%.
