'The 'Jew' in the Text': Representations of the Holocaust and Jewish Identity 3/4 (U03409)? Credit Points : 20 ? SCQF Level : 10 ? Acronym : DIV-3-DIV-3-JEW The aim of the course is to study the development of modern antisemitism from the 19th century onwards as well as the multiple factors that led to the Holocaust, the genocide of Jews in Europe. Further, the aim is to study responses to the Holocaust, both at the time of the unfolding events and in their aftermath. Thus the course splits into three distinct but interrelated parts. The first part will consider the development of modern antisemitism and introduce approaches to the study of antisemitism. The second part of the course will focus on historical approaches to the Holocaust, while the third part of the course introduces responses to the Holocaust in a variety of media (e.g. religious texts, literature, film, museums) and considers the significance of the Holocaust for the (religious) identities of contemporary Jews. 1. Show understanding of different approaches to the study of modern antisemitism.
2. Demonstrate a critical understanding of historiographical approaches to the Holocaust. 3. Outline a variety of responses to the Holocaust in their respective contexts. 4. Discuss the representation of the Holocaust in a variety of media. 5. Analyse the relevance of interpretations of the Holocaust for contemporary Jewish self-understanding(s). Assessment Information
10% on seminar presentations and participation, 30% on an essay, 60% on degree examination.
