Japan: Politics, Culture and Social Change 1868-1952 (VS1) (U03782)? Credit Points : 20 ? SCQF Level : 10 ? Acronym : HCA-3-JPCSC This course explores the political, social and cultural changes that occurred in Japan from 1868, when the old feudal order began to be dismantled and replaced by a centralized state, to the American occupation of Japan following its defeat in World War Two. Entry Requirements? This course is only available to part year visiting students. ? This course is a variant of the following course : HI0152 ? Pre-requisites : A pass in any first level historical course and any second level historical course or equivalent. Visiting students should normally have 3 to 4 History courses at grade B or above. By the end of the course, students should be able to -
*demonstrate in oral seminar presentations, coursework essays, and an end of course examination an understanding of the political, social and cultural forces that have shaped modern Japan from the mid- nineteenth to mid-twentieth centuries. *produce well written, argued and referenced coursework essays on specific topics in modern Japanese history. * demonstrate presentational and verbal skills in a seminar context. One essay of about 3000 words (one third of overall assessment); one take home examination paper (two-thirds of overall assessment).
