Sociology 2: Transformations in Late Modern Societies (U03816)

This course builds on Sociology 1 by examining some of the key processes underlying the formation and transformation of late modern societies. Patterns of social organisation and social division are studied, involving categories such as gender, work, ethnicity and risk. The sociological perspective is exemplified through topics which illustrate the connection between contemporary public issues and matters of personal and social identity.

Entry Requirements

? Pre-requisites : Passes in Sociology 1A and Sociology 1B With the permission of the Head of Sociology second year students may take this course and Sociology 1A and Sociology 1B concurrently

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students should be able to:
- construct a sociologically-informed argument, using appropriate evidence about contemporary society;
- give an account of the key processes of social change in modern societies;
- undertake the comparative analysis of major institutional areas or aspects of social life;
- place debates about matters of current social interest in a theoretical and comparative perspective

Assessment Information

One essay of between 1500 and 2000 words in length (worth 40% of final mark). Degree examination of two hours, in which two questions must be answered (worth 60% of final mark).
