Academic English for International Students 1 (U03885)

This course is designed to raise the participants' English language and study skills to the point where they are able to participate fully in courses of their choice offered in undergraduate programmes of study. It provides a range of activities to develop their critical and analytical reading skills, to promote fluency and confidence in spoken interaction, to improve the key enabling skills (summarizing, evaluating sources and avoiding plagiarism) for written assignments. There are five principal strands: Listening and note-taking; Reading and text analysis; Discussion skills; Academic writing; and Presentation skills.

Entry Requirements

? This course is not accepting further student enrolments.

? Pre-requisites : Overall 6.0 IELTS with a minimum of 5.0 in each section (or TOEFL equivalents).

? Prohibited combinations : U03955 Academic English for International Students 1 (pm)

? Additional Class Information : Sessions begin on Tuesday 18 September. Students should bring with them a copy of the set book "Study Listening" ISBN 9780521 533874, which will be used at the opening session. The book is in stock at Blackwell's bookshop.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students should be able to:-
- make efficient and critical use of source materials for a written assignment;
- use conventional means to cite and acknowledge those sources;
- participate comfortably in tutorial discussion;
- take notes from unmodified academic lectures;
- deliver a spoken presentation based on notes.

Assessment Information

 Graded written assignment (500-750 words) in the form of a critical review of an academic website;
 Graded oral presentation (10 minutes);
 English Proficiency Test Battery to allow assessment of overall linguistic progress (IELTS equivalent).
