Academic English for International Students 1 (U03885)? Credit Points : 20 ? SCQF Level : 7 ? Acronym : PPL-1-AEIS1 This course is designed to raise the participants' English language and study skills to the point where they are able to participate fully in courses of their choice offered in undergraduate programmes of study. It provides a range of activities to develop their critical and analytical reading skills, to promote fluency and confidence in spoken interaction, to improve the key enabling skills (summarizing, evaluating sources and avoiding plagiarism) for written assignments. There are five principal strands: Listening and note-taking; Reading and text analysis; Discussion skills; Academic writing; and Presentation skills. ? By the end of the course, students should be able to:-
- make efficient and critical use of source materials for a written assignment; - use conventional means to cite and acknowledge those sources; - participate comfortably in tutorial discussion; - take notes from unmodified academic lectures; - deliver a spoken presentation based on notes. Graded written assignment (500-750 words) in the form of a critical review of an academic website;
Graded oral presentation (10 minutes); English Proficiency Test Battery to allow assessment of overall linguistic progress (IELTS equivalent).
