General and Academic English for International Students (U03887)

This course is designed to help international students with an entry score of 5.5 IELTS improve their knowledge and understanding of English and to develop their confidence and proficiency in using English in both social and academic contexts.

The morning General English component comprises 60% of the course. This part of the programme is designed to provide a balance of core textbook-based classes offering a structured progression through a syllabus of grammar and vocabulary building with skills-based classes aimed at developing the four skills.
The afternoon Academic English component provides the remaining 40%. It will include: Listening and note-taking: Studying a subject in a second language; Effective Reading; Working in Groups
Writing: Evaluating texts; Avoiding plagiarism; Combining sources.

In addition to class work, participants are expected with the support of their tutors and advisors, to develop a programme of independent study using IALS self-access centre. This would require a minimum of 5 hours per week. Students themselves maintain the record of work for this programme. This forms part of the assessment process.

? Pre-requisites : Overall 5.5 IELTS with a minimum of 5.0 in each section (or TOEFL equivalents).

? Additional Class Information : Class sessions begin in Semester week 2 and end in week 11. The daily morning sessions are for General English. The three afternoon sessions (Mon, Tues and Thurs) are for Academic English study skills.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students should:
- have reached a level of English proficiency sufficient to take second semester academic courses or appropriate OLL courses or to continue with higher level General or Academic English studies;
- have improved their oral comprehension skills to the point where they can understand unmodified short talks. They will have worked through the processes of producing a written assignment.

Assessment Information

• For the General English component, students will be assessed throughout the course on the quality of their participation. There will be a final assessment of a written report on a personal project and their contribution to a seminar based on this project work.
• For Academic English, a timed essay (500-750 words)
• English Proficiency Test Battery, to allow assessment of overall linguistic progress (IELTS equivalent)
