Puritanism: Piety, Society and Revolution 1603-1689 (U03905)

? Credit Points : 20  ? SCQF Level : 10  ? Acronym : HCA-3-PPSR

This course attempts to help students to understand, to get into the mindset of, puritans, members of the Church of England who want to make their piety the dominant part of their lives, indeed, of everybody's lives. This needs a gradually acquired understanding of theology, life style, piety but also politics and the troubles of the 1630s and 40 that culminated in the execution of Charles I. Post-Restoration Puritanism will be approached through readings of Bunyan's Grace Abounding and Milton's Samson Agonistes.
