Christian Ethics: Topics (U03911)

An exploration of important issues in certain areas of contemporary debate, relating to church and
confessional ethics, justice, bioethics, human sexuality, and Christian ethics. Lectures, seminars and set texts in this course provide the opportunity to investigate different Christian approaches to the ethical practices, communities and decision-making processes in these spheres of human activity. Through the course students will scrutinize different Christian and secular attempts to interpret, to evaluate and to transform decision-making practices in church ethics (section 1), justice (section 2) bioethics and sexual ethics (section 3)

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course students should be able to:
1. demonstrate an understanding of the main issues at stake in the areas explored;
2. relate different critical approaches to various ethical theories & practices and their underlying
theological assumptions;
3. comment critically upon specified primary and secondary texts;
4. display a capacity for moral reasoning in relation to the practices of medicine, human sexuality,
justice and church ethics.

Assessment Information

1 essay (2000 words) (20%); private study notes (20%); Degree Exam (60%)
