Academic English for International Students 2 (pm) (U03956)? Credit Points : 20 ? SCQF Level : 7 ? Acronym : PPL-1-AEIS2 This course is designed to increase the students' ability to understand natural speech, to develop their critical reading skills, to promote fluency and confidence in spoken interaction. It familiarises them with the cyclical proces of research writing (selecting and delimiting a topic, drawing up a reading list, insetive text study, drafting, revising, through to final proofreading). The main course components are: Listening and note-taking from lectures; Reading and text analysis; Discussion skills; two Projects - one carried out in pairs, and one individually; and Presentation skills. ? Keywords : Academic English, non-native speakers Entry Requirements? Pre-requisites : Overall 6.5 IELTS with a minimum of 6.0 in each section (or TOEFL equivalents). Students who have not taken IELTS or TOEFL will be asked to take an entry test on Wednesday 9 January 2008 (2 pm or 4 pm) in room G36 at Paterson's Land, Moray House School of Education. ? Costs : There is one set book for the course: "Study Speaking" by Anderson, Maclean and Lynch (Cambridge University Press, 2004), which costs around £14.00 (paperback). Students do not need to buy the audio material. Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course, students will have
- gained experience in executing all the stages of a research project; - sharpened their critical reading skills; - raised their ability to contribute effectively to small-group discussion; - taken notes from lectures; - delivered two spoken presentations based on their own research. Assessment Information
• Two graded projects (750-1,000 words for the paired project; 1,000-1,200 words for the individual);
• Two graded oral presentations (5 minutes as one of a pair; 10 minutes as an individual presenter); • English Proficiency Test Battery to allow assessment of overall linguistic progress (IELTS equivalent).
