Acronym : HCA-3-AOriginsV The course provides an overview of human biological and cultural evolution from the first hominids to the emergence of our own genus Homo, using evidence provided by archaeology, molecular biology, and biological and social anthropology. The overall aim of the course is to provide students with a greater awareness of where we came from and how we have developed physically and culturally over the past six million years. Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course students should be able, by means of coursework and examination, to demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of the principal sources of evidence that can be used to reconstruct the early human past; the difficulties involved in interpreting that evidence, and the major areas of controversy; they should also have acquired the ability to critically assess current hypotheses of the origins of bipedalism, toolmaking etc; and developed a critical awareness of how archaeological perceptions and approaches to research have historically influcenced interpretations of the evidence.
Assessment Information
Coursework (essay) 40%, Take home examination 60%.
