Course description |
This module addresses the typical methodologies, constraints, and demands of contemporary artistic/creative environments in which sound technology is applied. Students will become acquainted with the technologies that are used in digital design and their implications on digital sound. Of particular emphasis will be the possibilities of digital sound production, multimedia, Internet applications and interaction. The course will introduce issues of design and usability. |

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
Familiarity with applications for design synthesis and presentation. An understanding of the issues involved in human-computer interaction and the ability to design and investigate simple interactions. Ability to work in a collaborative context of group review and critique. Ability to interpret and apply a set of requirements pertaining to a sound design task. An overview of some key intellectual ideas that have informed understandings of digital design. The ability to discuss project work in terms of recent theoretical ideas. The ability to be critical of digital technology and aware of its limitations. |
Assessment Information
Four Projects across the semester: Project 1: A one page abstract of an essay or report, to be submitted week 5 (10%). Project 2: 2000 word essay or report, developed from the abstract (30%) Project 3: Practical work involving the design of a system for interacting with and synthesising sound resources (50%) Project 4: An evaluation of an aspect of the practical work from the point of view of usability (10%). |
