Course description An integrated introduction to spoken and written Japanese for those with little or no previous knowledge of the language. The course will include kana writing (the Japanese phonetic writing), and an introduction to some kanji (Japanese Characters). A good deal of private study is necessary to meet the requirements of the course.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
To provide a structured introduction to Japanese grammar
To enable students to read and write hiragana, katakana and about 200 kanji characters, and to use Japanese for simple spoken and written communication.
Assessment Information
Continuous assessment (40%); 1 Class exam (semester 1), 10%; 2 interim tests, each worth 5% (semester 2); kanji mark (portfolio plus writing test) 20%.
Degree exam (60%), 3 hour written paper 50% Oral 10%.
