Course description |
The course consists of a survey of the classical literature of Japan from its beginnings in the eighth century through to the end of the Edo Period (1600-1867). The survey will centre on prose, poetry and drama in English translation, although passages from the originals will also be made available to students for reference and clarification. |

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
The principal aims of the course are to make students aware of the tremendous breadth and variety of classical Japanese literature and to develop critical awareness thereof both in terms of the indigenous literary and critical traditions and in comparison with Western literary works and thinking. |
