Course description Nature of operations and operations management, role of the operations manager, context for operations-goals and objectives, marketing, finance. Location and layout of facilities, capacity issues, scheduling, materials control, quality control, system control and maintenance. Analysis and design of work and work organisation, human factors in production and operations, motivation and the design of reward systems, the operational implications of the new technologies, innovation and operations.

Pre-requisites Students MUST have passed: Business Studies 1 (BUST08001) OR ( Industrial Management 1 (BUST08002) AND Techniques of Management (MAEE08002))

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
Knowledge & Understanding
On completion of the course students should:
a)be able to describe the key operations management concepts covered;
b)be able to discuss critically the practical use of the techniques covered, taking into account organisational context;
c)be able to explain the relationship between operations management with other organisational functions in the general context of the strategic goals and objectives of the organisation;


Cognitive Skills
On completion of the course students should:
a)demonstrate that they can work in tutorial groups to use operations management techniques to address operational problems;
b)demonstrate that they can describe their operations and carry out a critical analysis of their operations using concepts covered in the course lectures.

Key Skills
On completion of the assessed course project students should:
a) demonstrate their ability to plan and complete a study of a real-world organisation, including selecting and approaching an organisation, undertaking interviews, writing their study as a concise report and presenting their findings in a tutorial group.
Assessment Information
Essay of 2000 words in term 3. 1 project = 30%, degree exam = 70%; resit exam = 100%.
