Course description The major aim of Animal Body (3) is to achieve an integrated understanding of homeostasis, i.e. the maintenance of the internal environment of the animal in a stable and consistent state. This sound knowledge and understanding of the normal animal serves as a basis for the study of veterinary medical and surgical problems in the clinical years of the BVM&S programme.

Systems Biology & Pathobiology
The module will address the structure and function of the major body systems of the animal. Consideration of pathobiological states will be used to consolidate the understanding of normal function.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
Relating to Animal Body 3 students should be able to:

understand the structure and function of the peripheral and central nervous systems;
understand the structure and function of the locomotory system including the role of the nervous system in control of posture and locomotion
understand the principles of control of the body systems of the animal by nerves and hormones as well as by intrinsic mechanisms;
understand the contributions of the following body systems to homeostasis: cardiovascular, respiratory, renal, endocrine;
