Course description A lecture and project-based course enabling students to develop skills in 2D and 3D animation, character animation, techniques of montaging live action with CGI, storyboarding and narrative, and motion capture. The approach is experimental, looking beyond high-profile animation as seen in contemporary entertainment media, and provides an opportunity to explore innovative techniques and new contexts of application, including in interaction design.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
able to produce a complete digital animation of short duration and of showreel quality
ability to conceptualize and direct an animation project
ability to work as a team member of a joint animation project
understanding of creative processes in relation to digital animation and visualization
understanding of the tools and techniques of advanced digital visualization and animation
ability to assess and explore the capabilities of the medium in a range of professional contexts

Additional Information
Academic description The general aims and outcomes of the course are similar to those described in the Handbook for the MSc in Design and Digital Media, and will be expanded during the detailed course design phase.

This course is proposed as the first phase in the development of a new MSc in Digital Animation, to be started in the year 2011-12, subject to funding being available. See the attached application to CHSS for funds. If funds are not forthcoming from that source then we will seek other sources to advance the programme.
