Course description Introduction to chemical structure and reactivity with emphasis on the constitution and shape of organic molecules and the functional group concept. Standard first course, with Biological Chemistry 1B (CHE-1-BC1B), for students of Biological Sciences and other students requiring only one year of chemistry or intending to proceed to Chemistry for Life Sciences 2 (CHE-2-CLS).

Prohibited Combinations Students MUST NOT also be taking Chemistry 1A (CHEM08016) OR Introductory Chemistry for Biologists (CHEM07001)
Other requirements Course pre-requisite is a pass in Higher Chemistry (at grade A or B), or Advanced Higher or A-level (at grade A - C), or equivalent.
Additional Costs Purchase of a laboratory coat.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
At the end of the course, students should be able to:
1. describe and explain: the fundamental principles of the periodic table, simple chemical bonding ideas, the principles of thermodynamics and equilibria
2. recognise the main organic function groups, describe and explain the shapes of simple organic molecules, and apply these principles to more complex biologically relevant organic molecules. Describe and use structure determination techniques to analyse simple organic molecules
3. use their knowledge to explain observations and solve problems associated with material covered in the course
4. use laboratory equipment in a safe manner in order to measure physical quantities, and to interpret and analyse the results
5. write clear, succinct laboratory reports
