Course description Structural Engineering Design Project 4 gives students experience of a major design project within a realistic commercial environment. Students work as part of a team to produce a feasible bridge design, subject to time and cost constraints. The project draws together analysis, design, planning and evaluation skills learnt throughout the students&© degree programme. Creative thinking, team working, detailed analysis and iterative design skills are developed during the project.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
By the end of the project the student should be able to:
- understand the different stages of a design project, the importance of identifying the correct design concept, and the iterative nature of design;
- select appropriate design analysis tools for the conceptual and detailed stages of design;
- evaluate different design solutions based on economic, health and safety, aesthetic, and construction considerations (subject to relevant regulatory requirements);
- plan and carry out work within a team to meet a Client&©s deadlines; and
- submit clear and accurate work through engineering reports and drawings.

Syllabus The Structural Engineering Design Project is based around the Bridge Design Competition organised by the Steel Construction Institute. The course structure closely follows the progression of a typical design project:
- Familiarisation with the Design Brief
- Conceptual Design and Economic Assessment
- Detailed Design
- Production of Construction Drawings

The students&© work during the project is self led. Staff and guests from industry will be present to introduce the task, and to provide advice and assistance.
