This course allows students to gain experience and practice and knowledge of research methodology within the civil, structural, construction & environmental engineering research fields.
The course must be taken in conjunction with CIVE11031: MEng Thesis 5 (Discipline of Civil & Environmental Engineering)

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
This course will:
- provide an opportunity to work on a professionally challenging project;
- underline the importance and necessity for life-long learning;
- create enthusiasm for the profession through a challenging assignment;
- provide an opportunity for professional development in the widest sense;
- develop further report writing skills;
- develop skills in the organisation of an individual research programme;
- provide an understanding of research methods in civil, structural, construction and environmental engineering;
- encourage teamwork organisation and cooperation in developing and executing a work plan;
- enhance skills in research dissemination via the Web.

Assessment Information
By continuous assessment, the components of which are:
- a web poster in semester 1 which will disseminate initial research findings and plans (25% - joint assessment by second reader);
- an interim project submission at the end of semester 1 detailing the literature review as conducted so far (25%);
- a log book which records all progress on the project and is presented and discussed with supervisors at all meetings (25% - assessment by supervisor(s)); and
- an overall assessment of performance by the supervisor(s) (25%).

Syllabus |
Students are briefed on the general requirements and specifically on the web poster at the start of the course. Work is then done on a self-study basis with the supervision of an academic member of staff. Further details are given in the "Thesis Project Handbook" that accompanies both this and the MEng Thesis course. |
